Social and emotional wellbeing has long been recognised as a significant factor that affects learning.
Schools are considered to be key settings for the delivery of mental health promotion and early intervention strategies (NHMRC 1996). It has been estimated that 20-30% of young people will require additional support by way of a range of promotion, prevention and intervention strategies (WHO, 1994).
Schools are often the first point of contact for referral to an appropriate mental health service. Schools and school staff are well positioned to respond to the needs of individual students through a range of learning opportunities, support and referral procedures.
